Nuclear transports

Approximately 400,000 packs of radioactive material are transported every year across the Belgian territory, which corresponds more or less to 40,000 transports.

These transports are mostly of low-level radioactive nuclear material. Sometimes special transports take place for highly radioactive material.

Worldwide the medical, industrial and scientific sectors use radioactive material for different applications and research. The transport of radioactive materials is inextricably linked to every step in these activities, from the transportation of the raw materials, to production and use, and finally the processing and management of waste.

Specialized companies handle  transportation of radioactive material. They have the required equipment, trained and qualified personnel, and the necessary transport authorizations, delivered by the FANC.

Transportation of radioactive substances is national as well as international, because Belgium is also a transit country.
